Baja is one of the most typical water town in the hungarian part of the Danube. The intimate town was built by the bank of the Danube and Sugovice backwater, this is why the water plays a determinative role in the town’s life. Baja and the sorrounding area is among the most beautiful naturel landscapes in Hungary, due to the neighbouring Gemenc, the low-Danube and the protected flora and fauna.
Baja is a very important transport junction because of the bridge and it’s port. As the Low-Danube’s most important tourist center this place attracts not only inland but also lots of foreign visitors as well. The sorrounding rivers are suitable for swimming and also for water sports. Excursions can be made by excursion boats, bicycle, or with narrow-gauge railway. The sorrounding natural and man-made heritages give the special atmosphere of the city. Baja has a mediterranean feeling because of the climate, the closeness of the water, it’s architecture and the friendly inhabitents. In this city where hungarians, germans, serbs, and croats live calmly together the population is around fourty thousand, The rich cultural and gastronomic heritage of these nationalities are well preserved and can be seen during the events held from time to time.
