Vác is one of the most beautiful Baroque towns in Hungary, whose past goes back to the Bronze-age period. It has been a Roman Catholic and episcopal centre for centuries.
(Saint) Stephen I founded the Archbishopry of Vác. The construction of the Episcopal Church was finalized by Géza I., who was buried here upon his request. The internal decoration of the Cathedral was done in the era of Saint László. The church is situated at Géza Square, along with the episcopal palace, the canon’s house and the military barracks. The actual historical centre of Vác is made up of a fusion of German- and Hungarian parts and the preserved medieval city structure. Today, it is the intellectual and commercial centre of the left side of the Danube bend and is one of the most visited places in any excursion.
Take a walk from the quay alongside the prison to Köztársaság road and have a look at the Triumphal arch with its Classicist–style, the only arch in the country. It was built by Migazzi in 1764 on the occasion of Maria Theresa’s visit, who arrived here by boat from the Parliamentary session held in Bratislava. Restaurant nearby: Kőkapu Restaurant
If you go along in the opposite direction, you will get to Március 15. Square, the core of Vác. Take a look at the famous buildings of the Square. Restaurant nearby: the Aredo Restaurant and Coffee House Pay a visit to the Tourinform Office, where you will be given a city guide and a city centre map. We suggest that you take a look at the Memento mori exhibition while in the area. If you leave the square in the other direction, you will soon see Trinity Square, with the Piarist Church and the Trinity pillar. Going along from here, one reaches Constantinople Square. The construction of the Cathedral was begun here in 1761, and the Church was sanctified in 1772; the internal works, however, were finalized in 1777. (Visiting hours: 1 March-1 November. M-Sat: 10 a.m.-12 a.m. and 13 p.m.-18 p.m. Sun: 7:30 a.m.-19 p.m.) The Episcopal Palace (Migazzi Square 1.) was built between 1768 and 1775. It has a protected garden possessing many extraordinary plants. After your visit to the most notable buildings and your walk along the Budapest central road, you can then visit Vác Castle and its ruins, and the Franciscan church, after which one attains the Danube riverbank via the romantic Castle staircase. If you have enough free time, turn left, and you will end up at the Tidelands garden path, where you will be able to study the protected plants and animals. Pass along the Duna promenade, seeing the Halászkert Restaurant on your way, on the right side, from where one then gets to the Port.
