Esztergom is one of Hungary’s most historical towns. It was the location for royal personalities of high rank, significant events, rich palaces and churches, and the slaughter of cruel battles, the depredations of Mongol and Turkish hordes - thus it combines images of destruction and reconstruction. Indeed, the history of the town reflects that of the whole country.
Esztergom is a most popular tourist destination. It is situated on the Transdanubia, at the feet of the Pilis hills, to the West of Visegrád hill, in the North-eastern part of the Komárom-Esztergom region, on the right side of the river Danube, opposite the town of Sturovo, which belongs to Slovakia. It is also referred to as the upper city of the Danube-bend. It is surrounded by the Danube in a semi-circle, so it is a real port; and Prímás Island is located at its centre. As it is encompassed by the Danube to the West and by Vaskapu in the East, it exists in a north-south direction. Kertváros is situated 5 kms to the south and holds approximately 20% of the town’s population. Esztergom was the capital of Hungary in the Árpád era and was the centre of Esztergom county and, later, embodied Komárom-Esztergom up to 1950. As the seat of the Archbishopry of Esztergom, it is still the centre of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. The settlements of Szentgyörgymező, Szenttamás and Víziváros became part of the town in 1895, along with Pilisszentlélek in 1985. It is the official centre of the Constitutional Court, formed after the political transition; and it is the centre of the Euroregion of Ister-Granum.
Guests coming by boat along the Danube to the port close to Maria-Valéria Bridge are welcomed by the site of Prímás Palace, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral and the Millenium Monument, which represents Saint Stephen’s coronation.
Várhegy is the best starting point for getting to know Esztergom’s history as it has there the Royal Castle, the Cathedral and several statutes. One has a view of the Danube, the Mária-Valéria Bridge, Viziváros and Saint Thomas hill. Prince Géza had his seat on Várhegy. The remains of the Palace of Béla III., renovated in the XX century, along with its Royal Chapel are significant architectural monuments in Europe. The Cathedral, Várhegy and buildings of Classicist style in its close vicinity evoke the constructions made by the returning archbishops. The Cathedral of Esztergom, built in a Classicist style, is the biggest Church in Hungary and it has the highest privilege. Its length is 118 m, its width 49 m and its height is 100 m. Two towers of 57 m height are connected to the tympanon of the main entrance via arcades on both the right and left. The altarpiece boasts of the largest oil painting in the world on one canvas. You can visit the Chapel, which provides wonderful views. The crypt is the resting place of the Chief priest of Hungary along with the Archbishop József Mindszenty. The masterpieces of the world famous Treasury can be found in rooms on the Cathedral’s first floor. Being the richest ecclesiastical treasury within Hungary, its goldsmith and textile collection is outstanding at an international level. Várhegy is one of the most visited places of the country owing to the masterpieces to be found in the Treasury of the Central Cathedral and to the Mindszenty Monument. One can look at archaeological findings here, too, at a well-organized exhibition in the Castle Museum, among medieval building sections and fresco remains. The first floor gives space to findings of the period prior to the people’s immigration and to those commemorating the people’s immigration and the occupation of Hungary. The upper floor’s exhibition evokes the town’s history from the XIII-XIV to the end of the XVII centuries i.e. when there was the reoccupation of Hungary by the Turks. You can also see the royal home chapel, constructed in late-Roman and early Gothic styles, under the rules of Béla III. and Imre, being decorated with fresco remains from the end of the XIII and XIV centuries. The town is rich in monuments, like the Christian Museum, the Balassa Bálint Museum, the Library of the Central Cathedral, the small Danube riverbank, the Danube Museum and Széchenyi Square, which are located beneath Várhegy. The Christian Museum, also regarded as one of the richest country museums of Hungary, boasts some of the more notable treasures of the Medieval Hungarian and European Arts, and it has an impressive gallery. The museum holds more than 10 000 masterpieces of Fine and Industrial Design. It also has a significant collection of graphics, coins and religious ethnography of around 2000 objects; the Coffin of Christ of Garamszentbenedek, the Passion painting of Master M.S. and the Resurrecting Christ of Memling are among its valuable objects.
