There are more theories about the origin of the Hungarian grey cattle. Some people say that this breed had lived here even before the Hungarian conquest. Other people say that they had come with the first settlers. Some other people say that the grey cattle had brought in the country by the Cumanian. After the Turkish and the Tartar plundering The Hungarian grey cattle stock played a very important rule in the Hungarian economy. The Hungarian grey oxen were driven on foot to the big European markets (e.g. Venice, Nürnberg). In the best years approximately 100 thousand cattle were sold abroad. The grey cattle can be found in various tones. There is an important difference between the tones of the cows and the bulls. The bulls are sooty and they have black eyes. The long horns are white with black ends. The calves are rusty. These animals grows up slowly, the calves are detached in the age of 6-8 months. The heifer becomes matured in the age of 3 or 4 years. Nowadays they are breaded mainly for their beef. These animals live in natural environment, therefore they have a big importance in bio-feeding. The "racka" sheep can be easily recognized by their screwed horns, which are standing in “V” form. The weight of the ewe is 45 kilograms, the ram is about 60 kilograms. Their musculature is hardy. They are active, and sometimes even nervous. This breed is austere, hardy and it has a great immunity of any diseases. The wool of the “racka” is composed of wavy tufts, which are 25-30 long. These sheep can be found in three variations of colours. The most of them are yellowish, the others are black. They are used for wool and milk production. The meat of them is tasty and it contains less suet. „Mangalica” pig This breed is evolved from half wild pigs. Therefore they are very hardy they have a great immunity of any diseases. However their meat is very fat, it’s free of bad cholesterol. The “mangalica” pigs are medium size and they have a strong frame. They have serried, long hair (in winter their hair is curly), therefore these pigs are also called as “woolly pigs”. The sow drops 5-7 piglets. They are born with stripped back. The sows become matured in the age of 15 months. The weight of a full-grown sow is 70-100 kilograms. The “mangalica” pigs can be found in three variations of colours: blond, red and black with blond belly. Sometime lived fully black and stripped ones, too. Traditionally the blond ones are the real “mangalica” pigs. ![]() ![]()
